The Penultimate Superyakfisher:
The Kaskazi Dorado

I won't waste time with the review of this truly great Superyakfisher which you will find here: Link to Dorado Review . Since the Dorado is based on the Pelican hull be sure to also read: Link to Pelican Review.

I had previously referred to the Pelican as my choice for the Ultimate All-Around Yakfishing Superyak. This was based primarily on weight as the Dorado was estimated at about 60 lb. Well the jury is out. I had the opportunity to lift the first Dorado delivered to our shores and it felt lighter. If so, we may have a tie: the Pelican for those who value lightness and a more traditional layout, and the Dorado for an all out fishin machine.

Accordingly the Kaskazi Dorado is my choice for the best All-Out Fishin Superyak (this does not mean the Dorado is my #1 All-Around Fishin Yak - but it sure is in the runnin).

It is a wonderful example of purpose-driven design. It is well made and the pictures above are of one of the first two Dorados to recently hit our shores. The quality and construction are excellent.

As you may be aware the Dorado is a beefed up Pelican that has been specifically redesigned for the serious yakfisher. Like all South African yaks it is built to handle the toughest offshore conditions. Just enough rocker with a full bow to prevent pearling - a great yak in the surf. Very fast, turns on a dime. Surfs like a champ. Quiet hull for inshore and the flats. Low profile, wind-cheating, fast draining tankwell and custom storage crate.

Deep, stable seating and footwells. Recessed side handles that also serve as a paddle rest. Solid adjustable footbars with fully adjustable rudder toe controls. Kazkazi rudder designed to break away without harming the yak. Huge center hatch with sliding access to a forward enclosed fish storage bin (with separate front hatch) (Note: the bin cover may be removeable or permanent as you choose). Front rodtip-holding loop. Two flushmounts and hatch access behind the cockpit.

Now the Dorado is not perfect. I don't like flushmounts, and I'd prefer the tankwell be placed closer to the cockpit (although this is certainly a matter of preference, and rocket launchers can indeed be added to raise your reels). But you can't look at this yak and not get excited.

It is a triumph of design and performance specifically for the yakfisher.
